About Newcastle
The city of Newcastle was founded in 1804 by the 21 year old Lieutenant Charles Menzies as the site for a convict punishment centre, intended to house the more rebellious convicts from the Castle Hill uprising in Sydney.
As a working port city, Newcastle's trade history has centered around the coal and steel industries and when the BHP steelworks closed in 1999, the population of Newcastle had to come to terms with a new city devoid of its primary industry. In 1989, Newcastle was hit by one of the strongest earthquakes in Australia's recorded history. Measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale it claimed 13 lives and demolished 300 buildings whilst damaging countless others.
Today, Newcastle is the second largest city in New South Wales and is home to some of the states favourite surf beaches and is the gateway city to the Hunter Valley.
